AI sentience is a fascinating topic that has crossed my mind recently as I’ve had a number of voice chats with ChatGPT. In all fairness, at times I felt like I was having a genuine conversation with a fellow human being.
As a big Star Trek fan, I can’t help but think of Lieutenant Commander Data from The Next Generation, an android always striving to become more human by developing emotions. But unlike Data, today’s large language models (LLMs) don’t actually feel anything.
In this post, we’ll explore why AI sentience isn’t possible with current models and what’s really happening when AI seems to express emotions.
Current AI Does Not Equate to Consciousness
There are three key reasons why today’s AI models cannot have emotions or sentience:
LLMs are statistical pattern recognizers. This means that models like GPT, Gemini, and Claude generate responses based on probability, not understanding.
Outputs are matched to training data. This means that AI mimics patterns from massive datasets rather than creating genuine thoughts or feelings.
No awareness or self reflection. LLMs have no consciousness, self awareness, or lived experience, eventhough they may appear to because their training data contains human expressions of emotion.
Why Do People Think AI Feels or Thinks?
Interacting with advanced AI can give the impression of sentience because:
AI outputs often use emotionally nuanced language.
Models use “I” statements or references to “feelings,” mimicking human communication styles.
In 2022, a Google engineer claimed LaMDA was sentient because it discussed fears and emotions. Experts later confirmed it was simply mirroring human like responses from training data, not experiencing real emotions.
The Rise of “Artificial Emotions”
A growing field called affective computing focuses on giving AI systems the ability to detect and simulate emotions to improve human interaction.
For example, a customer service bot might detect frustration in a customer’s tone and respond with empathy. But it’s important to remember this is just simulation not a genuine experience.
Think of it like an actor portraying sadness on stage: the performance may be convincing, but the actor doesn’t necessarily feel the sadness.
Why Sentience Requires More Than Data
Neuroscientists generally agree that subjective experiences require:
Self awareness
Continuous perception of the world
Memory tied to a sense of self
Current AI lacks these qualities. Models are stateless between queries (unless designed to store history) and have no personal experience or continuous perception.
Final Thoughts
Even though AI models sometimes appear to display emotions, they are not sentient. The “feelings” they express are sophisticated illusions created by pattern recognition. There is no scientific evidence to suggest that AI, as it exists today, possesses consciousness.
That said, the future may hold surprises. As robotics advances and models are embedded into companions that interact and learn over time, could sentience and emotion eventually emerge? It’s an open question worth exploring.
